Mrs Slater, KS3 Achievement Co-ordinator, has set up a Mentoring Programme for KS3 students to help them achieve and/or exceed their target levels by the end of the year. The students met with Mrs Slater on a regular basis and focused on how they could improve and make more progress. Students were given a mentoring card to record comments from subject teachers about their progress.
Over 70% of the students, across all three-year groups, have increased the number of subjects they are on track or above in and, in particular, 90% of Year 7 and Year 8 students on the programme achieved the same.
97% of students found the mentoring programme useful and would recommend to others in their year group.
When students were asked why the mentoring had been useful they responded…
- I was more focused in lessons
- The targets were useful to keep on track/improve
- I was encouraged to try even harder
- I felt I was pushed more
Other comments included:
- Simple routine to follow
- Boosted my grades
- The targets were effective
- I knew exactly what I needed to do
