Team Wardle bring back 33 medals in Rochdale School Athletics Competition

Monday 18th June 2018 our PE department took students from Year 7 – 10 to compete at the annual Rochdale School Athletics Event at Sports City in Manchester. The day started early with our students on the track for 9am warming up and getting a feel for the amazing facility.

With the first event starting at 9:30am our squad listened to instructions given by staff and were ready to go with the track heats starting the day. By 10am we had already qualified for six finals that would take place in the afternoon and pupils were enjoying the competitive atmosphere. Our first lot of medals came from our Year 9 girls who competed in the javelin, discus and shot put and won 2 silver medals and 1 gold medal. This got us off to a great start.

Soon after our Year 8 students went out to compete in the jumping events and returned with 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 3 bronze medals. At this point the day was well and truly under way with track and field events taking part at the same time. By dinner time we had 16 medals and had qualified for 10 finals.

After dinner came the finals and the greatly anticipated team relays. With some outstanding performances all round and an amazing personal best from Year 10 student Holly we finished the day off in style with a grand total of 28 individual medals – 8 gold, 12 silver and 8 bronze plus 5 team relay medals.

“The pupils were a credit to themselves and the school, watching how they supported each other was fantastic to see. Pupils when not competing were off supporting each other and the team spirit was wonderful to observe. As a PE teacher I love nothing more than bringing back medals however the highlight of the day for me was watching how our pupils encouraged and took care of one another. With a total of 28 individual medals and 5 team relay medals this has been our most successful year! Well done team Wardle.”
