On Sunday 28th April 2019, Wardle Academy Youth Band competed in the 2019 European Youth Brass Band Championships, just a couple of weeks after becoming National Champions. Wardle Academy won the European Championships last year in Utrecht, Netherlands and were hoping to retain their European Champion titles again this year in Montreux, Switzerland.
The band played four pieces, including the set test piece and a trombone solo performed by Year 10 student Adam from memory. Their performance was outstanding. Following this, the band watched a short concert by the European Youth Brass Band and awaited the results. The first announcement was that Year 10 student Adam had won the soloist prize; this is a fabulous achievement as standards throughout the competition were high. We are very proud of Adam and all players for their performance. Following this, the band were ecstatic to hear that they had retained their title as European Youth Brass Band Champions of 2019.
Wardle Academy Headteacher, Mr Hesketh said: “A huge well done to everyone involved. We are incredibly proud of the band and their amazing achievements. Like many of our young people and staff at Wardle, once again, they have exceeded expectations.” Winning this is a great achievement as the standard is incredibly high and many hours of practice are required to perform at this level. This is turning out to be another great year for Wardle Academy’s music department and they hope to achieve yet more in the coming months. These outstanding achievements show the dedication and passion of our students and the Music department. They represent the school and community brilliantly and Wardle Academy are extremely proud of all of them.
The band have now qualified to compete at the 2020 Europeans in Lithuania - will they become triple champions? The band will need to raise around £20,000 in order to travel to the championships next year. If anybody is interested in donating towards or sponsoring the band, please contact Wardle Academy.
