The Wardle Watergrove Walk
During the final full week of the academy year, our Year 8 and 9 students had the opportunity to take part in a visit to the Watergrove Reservoir. At Wardle we believe that students learn best when they can see, hear, and experience things first-hand.
All young people need the knowledge, skills and understanding to live in, and contribute to, a global society and this begins with an understanding of the world in which we live, including the languages, values and cultures of different societies. Whilst walking around Watergrove, students were presented with a variety of videos which gave them an insight into the surrounding areas of Wardle and how they correlate to the subjects they are studying within the academy. For example, one of the videos gave an insight into the importance of cross-curricular learning. This allowed students to reflect on the trip and gain a deeper understanding of how subjects interlink, thus offering a way for students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding, with a hope of becoming motivated to learn through a series of interconnected topics.
Students walked an amazing 11.14km, which not only allowed them to develop key social skills, but also develop a greater understanding of real-life links with key subjects taught. Students stated “I have learnt so much about the local area and how this can be linked to school,” “I have really enjoyed the walk and the views were amazing,” and “it is nice to be out of school and having a chance to engage with other students”.
Thank you to all of the staff here at Wardle Academy for making the trip possible!
